Cannot enable Norton Protection

Situation:
When you click the Enable Protection check box on the Norton Protection tab under Properties for the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, the hourglass appears for about a minute and then disappears. You never see the message "Initializing Drive x:".

Solution:
This can happen when the Norton Protection driver has been prevented from loading, or has been disabled. Follow these steps to load the driver:

Windows NT:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then choose Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Devices icon.
  3. Select Norton Unerase Protection Driver.
  4. Click Startup, click Automatic, click OK, and then Close.

Windows 2000:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then choose Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon, then double-click the Services icon.
  3. From the list of services, locate and double-click Norton Unerase Protection .
  4. In the Startup Type area, click the drop-down menu button and select Automatic.
  5. Click OK

Windows XP:
  1. Click the Start button, and then choose Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon, then double-click the Services icon.
  3. Locate and double-click Norton Unerase Protection from the list of services.
  4. In the Startup Type area, click the drop-down menu button and select Automatic.
  5. Click OK

This can also happen if the /SOS or /BOOTLOG switches have been added to the Boot.ini file on the line for normal bootup. Normally, these switches are only on the line for VGA mode. If you have also put either on the line for normal mode, you will see the symptoms mentioned.

Sample BOOT.INI
Since Boot.ini is a text file, you can easily recreate it. Here is a sample Boot.ini used on a computer that only has Windows NT (not a dual boot system).

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos C:\="MS-DOS"

Note that the /sos switch was added by Norton Utilities to the "Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" line of Boot.ini. This prevents Nprotect from loading in VGA mode. If you also have the /sos or /bootlog switch on the "Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00" line, Nprotect will not load during a normal bootup.

Under Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows NT, you may also see the same symptoms caused by the following:

Product(s): Norton Utilities 2001 v5.0 - WinNT/2000, Norton Utilities 2002 v6.0 - WinNT/2000/XP
Operating System(s): Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP
