Norton AntiVirus scans very slowly or stops responding

Situation:
Norton AntiVirus (NAV) takes a very long time to scan a drive, or stops responding, and you want to know why.

Solution:
There are a number of reasons why NAV would scan a drive slowly or stop responding. Some of these are:


If Norton AntiVirus stops responding when scanning files, it may be having a problem scanning a particular file or folder. Breaking down the scan may help to identify what Norton AntiVirus is having problems scanning.

To break down the Norton AntiVirus Scan:
  1. Open Norton AntiVirus.
  2. Click File View.
  3. Click to highlight a file or folder.
  4. Click Scan or Scan/Repair to scan the file or folder.
  5. If Norton AntiVirus completes the scan, repeat the steps 2 through 4 until everything has been scanned, or Norton AntiVirus does not complete the scan.

If Norton AntiVirus is not having a problem with a specific file or folder, then it may be having a problem because of a damaged QuickScan file, or compressed files.

Complete the following steps to delete the QuickScan file and turn off compression scanning in NAVM 8.x or 7.0.2 in OS X:

NOTES:
  1. Launch Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh (NAVM).
  2. In the NAVM window, choose "File View" and click the arrow to the left of your hard disk's name, or double-click the hard disk to open it.

    NOTE: Be sure to enable the Show Invisible Files box.
  3. Scroll down until you see the file named "NAVMac800QSFile." There may be older versions of the NAV QuickScan file if you previously scanned your disk with other versions of NAVM. If there are other QuickScan files, please delete these as well.
  4. Select the QuickScan file or files.
  5. Click the "Trash" button, located in the lower-right area of the window.
  6. Click OK, when prompted.
  7. Click Preferences, then click Compression.
  8. Click Deselect All.
  9. Close the Compression window.
  10. Quit NAVM.
  11. Restart the computer.
  12. Launch NAVM, and run a scan.

Please be sure that you also run a disk utility program, such as Norton Disk Doctor or Disk First Aid to check for drive damage.

Complete the following steps to delete the QuickScan file and turn off compression scanning in NAVM 7.x:

NOTES:
  1. Boot the computer with extensions off, by restarting and holding down the Shift key.
  2. After the computer has started, launch NAVM.
  3. In the NAVM window, choose "File View" and click the arrow to the left of your hard disk's name, or double-click the hard disk to open it.

    NOTE: Be sure to enable the Show Invisible Files box.
  4. Scroll down until you see the file named "NAV 7.0 QuickScan." There may be older versions of the NAV QuickScan file if you previously scanned your disk with other versions of NAVM. If there are other QuickScan files, please delete these as well.
  5. Select the QuickScan file or files.
  6. Click the "Move to Trash" button, located in the lower-right area of the window.
  7. Click OK, when prompted.
  8. Choose Preferences, and click Compression.
  9. Click Deselect All.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Quit NAVM.
  12. Restart the computer.

Complete the following steps to delete the QuickScan file and turn off compression scanning in NAVM 6.x:

NOTES:
  1. Boot the computer with extensions off by restarting and holding down the Shift key.
  2. After the computer has started, launch NAVM.
  3. In the NAVM window, choose "View by file," and click the arrow to the left of your hard drive's name.
  4. Scroll down until you see a file named "NAV QuickScan 6.0." There may be a NAV QuickScan 5.0 file if you previously installed NAVM 5.
  5. Select the QuickScan file or files.
  6. Click the "Move to Trash" button, located in the lower-right area of the window.
  7. Click OK, when prompted.
  8. Choose Preferences, and click Compression.
  9. Click Deselect All.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Quit NAVM.
  12. Restart the computer.
  13. Launch NAVM, and run a scan.

Please be sure that you also run a disk utility program, such as Norton Disk Doctor or Disk First Aid to check for drive damage.

Complete the following steps to delete the QuickScan file and turn off compression scanning in NAVM 5.x:

NOTES:
  1. Launch NAVM.
  2. Click the File menu, then click Delete File.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, select the hard drive.
  4. Search the root level of the hard drive and locate the (otherwise invisible) QuickScan file.
  5. Select the NAV QuickScan 5.0 file, then click Delete.
  6. Click OK, when prompted.
  7. Choose Preferences, and click Compression.
  8. Click Deselect All.
  9. Click Save.
  10. Quit NAVM.
  11. Restart the computer.
  12. Launch NAVM, and run a scan.

Please be sure that you also run a disk utility program, such as Norton Disk Doctor or Disk First Aid to check for drive damage.
