Determining whether Script Blocking is protecting your computer

Situation:
This document describes how to test the Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking feature to ensure that it is working correctly.

Solution:
SBSample.vbs is a test script provided by Symantec for the purpose of testing the Script Blocking feature of Norton AntiVirus. SBSample.vbs is not a virus. It is a test script that has been preprogrammed to alert on the SBSample.vbs as a way to test that Script Blocking is working correctly.

Do the following to download SBSample.vbs and test Script Blocking:

The details of these steps follow

Download SBSample.vbs
Download the SBSample.vbs file to the Windows desktop.

Check that Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking is active
  1. Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.
  2. Click Options. Click Norton AntiVirus if you see a menu.
  3. In the Options list box, click Script Blocking.
  4. Make sure "Enable Script Blocking (recommended)" is checked.
  5. Click OK and then close Norton AntiVirus.

Test Script Blocking
  1. Double-click the SBSample.vbs file that you downloaded to the Windows desktop. The following dialog box appears.

  2. Click OK. The following box appears:

  3. Click OK. The following Script Blocking alert appears

Choose Stop this script, Allow this activity once or Allow the entire script once. Do not choose "Quarantine this script", since the test script was not designed to test the quarantine functionality. Also, if you choose "Authorize this script", then you will no longer see alerts when you run the SBSample.vbs test script.

You can run this file as often as needed.
